"Soldering Basics"

  • Jewelry Design and Craft Expo, Tucson Gem Show Embassy Suites by Hilton Tucson East | 6555 E Speedway Blvd Tucson, Arizona 85710 United States (map)

Soldering is the main technique used in silversmithing to connect components. Soldering can sometimes be a daunting task if one is not familiar with the materials, tools and supplies; however, it can also be very simple, clean and safe with some basic knowledge and practice. In this demonstration Robert will cover many different techniques commonly used when soldering. He will also include some tricks he has developed over the past twelve years of silversmithing, making clean and strong connections with very minimal, or no overflow. Robert will talk about and demonstrate with different materials, metals, tools, techniques and supplies; discussing the pro and cons of all. This demo is for all levels, from beginner to the experienced. The beginner will get a look at what it takes to start soldering with some basic techniques and supplies. For the experienced, even if you have been soldering for years, I have found that some individuals may need just an extra tip or trick to bring their soldering game up to the next level. Some of the techniques that will be discussed and demonstrated: Torch temps, heat control and flame deflection, fluxing, using a lazy susan, pickling, proper connection points, metal preparation, pick soldering, stick soldering, paste soldering, sweat soldering, positioning, heat sinks, heat resists, elevated soldering, solder resists, different types of solders, equipment used during soldering, and different types of torches and gases.
